Call at Danube University Krems accepted

Already last summer I was honoured by a call at Danuabe University Krems (DUK) for a professorship "Technology enhanced Learning and Multimedia". Finally I have signed the contract last week. I will start at DUK with 1st of May 2006.

Danube University Krems (DUK) is still a very young university. DUK started in 1994 – at that time with the status of an University of Applied Science (polytechnic). With a special federal law DUK almost equaled the status  of a normal university without loosing its special focus and role of postgraduate studies. The so called DUK law (pdf, 112kB, German) is oriented with some exceptions (no rights for promotions and habilitations) at the federal Austrian University Law 2002 (Universitätsgesetz 2002).

Innovative and challenging new tasks

The University of Continuing Education Krems (= the official name) has according to the law the following tasks:
  1. Development and execution of university courses;
  2. Scientific research supporting the teaching of their university courses;
  3. Development to a European competence center for Continuing Education with special focus on new countries of the European Union;
  4. Considerations of new forms of teaching and learning focussing especially on Distance Teaching;
  5. Development and implementation of a system for quality and performance assurance.
At the moment (winter term 2005/2006) DUK offers 130 university courses and has 3228 students from 42 countries.

Head of the Department for Interactive Media and Education Technologies (IMB)

I will lead the Department for Interactive Media and Education Technologies (IMB) founded by the convergence of three former so called centers. The website of the university will be renewed and relaunched in the next weeks, but you can find my new staff in looking up these former centers:
The similarity of the department names in Hagen and Krems ("Education Technology") is not a coincidence: In a 2-day workshop in November 2005 we (re)invented this name. It expresses the teaching tasks of the new department and the continuation of my (research) work as well.

The November seminar was a very important milestone in my decision to change from Hagen to Krems: I became acquanted with my new (highly motivated !) staff and got the first feeling for the new tasks and challenges.

Besides from project financing I will lead a staff of 16 people. 4 positions (1 full time and 1 half time secretary, 1 server adminstrator and 1 scientifc assistant) will be offered in the next few days. Stay tuned on these pages if you are interested to join my team!

More (German) background infos on my personal decision to accept the call to Krems can be found on my personal weblog under Gedanken zu meinem Wechsel an die DUK.
